Since making her professional debut in 1957, Dench has been regarded as one of Britain\u2019s best actresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The English-born Dench can look back on a legendary career on the stage and screen \u2013&nbsp;she\u2019s basically done it all and is praised everywhere she goes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But even though she\u2019s proud of her legacy, the iconic actress doesn\u2019t like to be called a \u201dnational treasure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor one thing,\u201d she told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/movies\/judi-dench-says-she-detests-being-called-a-national-treasure-in-my-minds-eye-im-about-39\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">People<\/a>, \u201cit\u2019s a terrible label. So dusty, so dreary. For another, it relegates me to being an 86-year-old woman. Whereas in my mind\u2019s eye I\u2019m 6ft and willowy and about 39.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But regardless of whether Dench feels like a young woman, her personal life testifies that she\u2019s been through a lot. And now, at age 87, the ailments are starting to set in \u2014&nbsp;as is often the case with us all as we grow older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"532\" height=\"828\" src=\"https:\/\/makamuki.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-33.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-313\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/makamuki.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-33.png 532w, https:\/\/makamuki.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-33-193x300.png 193w, https:\/\/makamuki.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-33-300x467.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 532px) 100vw, 532px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Oscar-winning actress&nbsp;lost her husband&nbsp;of 30 years, Michael Williams, back in 2001.&nbsp;The couple married in 1971 and had a loving relationship until his death from lung cancer. In 2010, Dench featured in a heartbreaking interview where she opened up about losing the love of her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fighting back her tears, Dench said<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>that she would never get over losing her husband. Michael was 65 when he passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dHe was the most unselfish man, and he wouldn\u2019t ever attribute that to anything that might be between us\u2026 Oh, God, how he used to make me laugh. He used to make me absolutely howl,\u201d she\u00a0said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dench never thought that she would find love again after Michael\u2019s death. But since 2010, the actress is in a relationship with David Mills, a&nbsp;conservationist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dI wasn\u2019t even prepared to be ready for it. It was very, very gradual and grown up. It\u2019s just wonderful,\u201d she told\u00a0The Times\u00a0in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent interviews, Dench has declared that she\u2019s not planning to stop acting anytime soon \u2013 though it\u2019s a lot harder for her to perform these days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The actress has previously discussed her battle with advanced macular degeneration, but in a recent appearance on&nbsp;<em>The Graham Norton Show Dench<\/em>&nbsp;described how her eyesight has changed in the past decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dIt has become impossible and because I have a photographic memory, I need to find a machine that not only teaches me my lines but also tells me where they appear on the page,\u201d the 88-year-old actor said when discussing the difficulty she faces when learning her lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"508\" height=\"761\" src=\"https:\/\/makamuki.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-34.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/makamuki.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-34.png 508w, https:\/\/makamuki.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-34-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/makamuki.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-34-300x449.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2012, the Oscar winner revealed she had macular degeneration, a condition that blurs your central vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dIn response to the numerous articles in the media concerning my eye condition \u2013 macular degeneration- I do not wish for this to be overblown,\u201d she told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/news\/119211_Dame_Judi_Dench_I_m_Not_Going_Blind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ET<\/a>&nbsp;at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dThis condition is something that thousands and thousands of people all over the world are having to contend with\u2026and it\u2019s something I have learnt to cope with and adapt to \u2014 and it will not lead to blindness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there\u2019s no cure, treatment can help slow the progression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, ten years later, Dench explained her eyesight has worsened, making it \u201cimpossible\u201d to read. In an interview with&nbsp;Louis Theroux in 2022, she was asked how bad her condition was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dBad. Bad enough. Bad enough in that you\u2019re quite fuzzy. You\u2019re just a tad fuzzy,\u201d Dench answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"507\" height=\"355\" src=\"https:\/\/makamuki.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-35.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/makamuki.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-35.png 507w, https:\/\/makamuki.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/image-35-300x210.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 507px) 100vw, 507px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, her bad eyesight is affecting her personal life as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dI can\u2019t read the paper now, I can\u2019t do the crossword, I can\u2019t read a book,\u201d she told<em>&nbsp;<\/em>Radio Times&nbsp;in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though certain aspects of acting have become extremely difficult, the 88-year-old Dame has\u00a0no plans of retiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dI don\u2019t want to retire. I\u2019m not doing much at the moment because I can\u2019t see. It\u2019s bad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, she relies on industry friends to help her. &nbsp;And thankfully, the beloved actress has a photographic memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dYou find a way of just getting about and getting over the things that you find very difficult,\u201d Dench said. \u201cI\u2019ve had to find another way of learning lines and things, which is having great friends of mine repeat them to me over and over and over again.
